Bursaria spinosa (Sweet Bursaria) 50 Seeds

Category:
Description Bursaria spinosa, commonly known as Sweet Bursaria, is a hardy Australian native shrub or small tree.  The species occurs mainly in the eastern and southern half of Australia and not in Western Australia or the Northern Territory. It typically grows 2–5 metres tall, occasionally reaching 10 m in sheltered conditions. The smooth branches are sometimes armed with thorns, and the leaves are arranged alternately along the stems or clustered around the nodes and have a pine-like fragrance when bruised. Living for 25 to 60 years, it can resprout from its woody base after bushfire. The highly rhizomatous, plants of a stand are often genetically a single plant. Despite being genetically identical, different plants and even single shoots can be very distinct in appearance (for instance, spineless shoots previously regarded as a subspecies “inermis”) Glossy green leaves and masses of fragrant white star-shaped flowers appear in summer, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The plant produces distinctive purse-shaped seed capsules, and is an important food plant for several species of butterflies and moths, particularly those of the genus Paralucia, and native bees. Adaptable to a wide range of soils, B. spinosa tolerates drought, light frost, and full sun to partial shade, making it an excellent choice for habitat gardens, revegetation projects, and native landscaping.   Common Name. Blackthorn, Native Box   Germination. A cold stratification period (refrigerating seeds for about 4 weeks) can improve germination. Sow Bursaria spinosa seed in a seed-raising mix just below the surface. Keep moist. Germination generally occurs in around 10-28 days. Seedlings are slow growing.   Disclaimer: We personally count every seed packet to ensure it contains at least the specified number of seeds. However, mistakes can happen, so please reach out if you notice any inconsistencies. These seeds are believed to meet the standard viability percentage for their species, sourced either from our own SAB nursery or from reputable, trusted breeders. Do not hesitate to contact us for up-to-date germination rates or for a germination test to be conducted.   Interested in this species?
