Description Agonis flexuosa, commonly known as the peppermint tree or willow myrtle, is a species of tree in the Myrtaceae family, native to the southwest of Western Australia. Agonis flexuosa is an evergreen tree that typically grows to a height of 10-15 metres, though it can sometimes reach up to 20 metres. It has a weeping, graceful form with drooping branches. The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and can be up to 15 cm long. When crushed, they emit a strong peppermint scent, which is how the tree gets its common name. The bark is rough and fibrous, often peeling in long strips. The tree produces small, white, five-petaled flowers that grow in clusters along the stems. Flowering usually occurs in spring and early summer. The fruit is a small, woody capsule containing seeds. Due to its attractive weeping habit and fragrant leaves, Agonis flexuosa is commonly used in landscaping and as a street tree in suitable climates. The leaves can be used to extract essential oils that have a peppermint-like aroma. In some indigenous cultures, parts of the tree have been used for medicinal purposes. Approx. 16,000 – 17,000 seeds per gram. Habitat Agonis flexuosa typically grows in sandy soils in coastal areas, woodlands, and along riverbanks. It is well adapted to Mediterranean climates with wet winters and dry summers. It prefers full sun to partial shade with well-drained soils. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, but young trees require regular watering. Common Name. Western Australian Peppermint; Swan River Peppermint; Willow Myrtle. The Noongar peoples know the tree as Wanil; Wonnow; Wonong; Wannang. Germination. Sow Agonis flexuosa seed on the surface of a porous seed-raising mix and sprinkle a very light covering of the seed-raising mix over the seed. Do not bury the seed deeply. Seeds generally sprout in 4 to 30 days; however, the seedlings may be susceptible to a disease called “damping off”.
